Preemptive Scheduling with Rejection

چکیده
We consider the problem of preemptively scheduling a set of n jobs on m (identical, uniformly related, or unrelated) parallel machines. The scheduler may reject a subset of the jobs and thereby incur jobdependent penalties for each rejected job, and he must construct a schedule for the remaining jobs so as to optimize the preemptive makespan on the m machines plus the sum of the penalties of the jobs rejected. We provide a complete classification of these scheduling problems with respect to complexity and approximability. Our main results are on the variant with an arbitrary number of unrelated machines. This variant is APX-hard, and we design a 1.58-approximation algorithm for it. All other considered variants are weakly NP-hard, and we provide fully polynomial time approximation schemes for them. Finally, we argue that our results for unrelated machines can be carried over to the corresponding preemptive open shop scheduling problem with rejection.

Online scheduling of unit jobs on three machines with rejection: A tight result
We design an algorithm of the best possible competitive ratio for preemptive and non-preemptive scheduling of unit size jobs with rejection on three identical machines. The algorithm does not use preemption even for the preemptive variant, and it has the interesting feature that one of its parameters is not fixed in advance, and it is defined based on the properties of the first input job havin...
متن کاملPreemptive multiprocessor scheduling with rejection
The problem of online multiprocessor scheduling with rejection was introduced by Bartal, Leonardi, Marchetti-Spaccamela, Sgall and Stougie 4]. They show that for this problem the competitive ratio is 1 + 2:61803, where is the golden ratio. A modiied model of multipro-cessor scheduling with rejection is presented where preemption is allowed. For this model, it is shown that better performance is...
متن کاملA Multiprocessor System with Non-Preemptive Earliest-Deadline-First Scheduling Policy: A Performability Study
This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the performability of a firm realtime system modeled by a multi-server queue. The service discipline in the queue is earliestdeadline- first (EDF), which is an optimal scheduling algorithm. Real-time jobs with exponentially distributed relative deadlines arrive according to a Poisson process. All jobs have deadlines until the end of s...
متن کاملThe preemptive resource-constrained project scheduling problem subject to due dates and preemption penalties: An integer programming approach
Extensive research has been devoted to resource constrained project scheduling problem. However, little attention has been paid to problems where a certain time penalty must be incurred if activity preemption is allowed. In this paper, we consider the project scheduling problem of minimizing the total cost subject to resource constraints, earliness-tardiness penalties and preemption penalties, ...
متن کاملFrom Preemptive to Non-preemptive Scheduling Using Rejections
We study the classical problem of scheduling a set of independent jobs with release dates on a single machine. There exists a huge literature on the preemptive version of the problem, where the jobs can be interrupted at any moment. However, we focus here on the non-preemptive case, which is harder, but more relevant in practice. For instance, the jobs submitted to actual high performance platf...
